1983-
1987:
Ryman faced a contested reselection battle in his Constituency Labour Party, and though successfully reselected claimed that there was infiltration by the Militant tendency. He later decided to retire but opposed the selection of Campbell and called for an NEC investigation. He resigned the Labour whip in April 1987.

Note:-
1987-
1992:
Nellist was accused in 1991 of links with the Revolutionary Socialist League, a group infiltrating the Labour Party under the name 'Militant tendency'. As a result his membership of the Labour Party was suspended, and in December 1991 after a National Executive Committee meeting he was expelled from the Labour Party and deprived of the Labour whip. Nellist opposed this decision, and obtained the support of his Constituency party (which was subsequently suspended by the National Executive Committee) and a number of local trade unions who financed his campaign.

Note:-
1983:Tibbitts sought election as an 'Anti-Corruption' candidate. He was campaigning on behalf of his son who had lost a legal action against Cambridge University Press for failing to publish a book he had written. He also alleged that Leeds police collaborated with far right parties.

Holton opposed cuts in government spending on education. Joseph was Secretary of State for Education at the time of the election.
