1987- 1992: | Nellist was accused in 1991 of links with the Revolutionary Socialist League, a group infiltrating the Labour Party under the name 'Militant tendency'. As a result his membership of the Labour Party was suspended, and in December 1991 after a National Executive Committee meeting he was expelled from the Labour Party and deprived of the Labour whip. Nellist opposed this decision, and obtained the support of his Constituency party (which was subsequently suspended by the National Executive Committee) and a number of local trade unions who financed his campaign. |
