| 1997: | Jones and her agent, Des Whicher, were convicted at Nottingham Crown Court on 19th March 1999 of knowingly making a false declaration as to election expenses in the 1997 general election. As this was a corrupt practice, she was disqualified from membership of the House of Commons. At an Appeal Court hearing on 15th April 1999, Jones' appeal was allowed and her conviction was set aside. After the conviction was quashed, the Speaker of the House of Commons asked the Attorney-General to refer the issue of Jones' status to the High Court. On 29th April 1999 the Court decided that the disqualification lasted only as long as the conviction and Jones then retook her seat. | ||||||||
