* There is a discrepancy with the count from Fife. The total number of ballot papers (Yes, No and spoilt) in the first question is 166,025, close to the number of electors marked on registers as voting (166,554). However on the second question, the total number of ballot papers is 167,999, more than the number of ballot papers issued.
The Scottish Office has verified that the figures given above, which are taken from the press release (no. 1269/97) giving the results of the referendum, are those which were certified by the counting officer on the night. Therefore, despite the discrepancy, the above is the result of the referendum even though it does not represent the actual votes cast.
The source of the discrepancy is unknown.
